Frederick Hayes: Doing Pretty Good @ GRIDSPACE
June 9 – July 14, 2019
Opening reception: Sunday, June 9, 4-6 pm

GRIDSPACE is proud to present a solo exhibition of large scale portrait drawings and sculptures made of found and recycled objects by Frederick Hayes entitled Doing Pretty Good.  Hayes’ work is rooted in the working class African American experience. In Hayes’ own words:

I grew up in a family that watched the 6 o’clock news, looked at Ebony and Jet magazines, as well as the local newspapers, while constantly taking pictures at almost all family events and non-events. As a result, the idea of the disembodied head became integral to my perception of human representation. That notion of representation has given impetus to past and present works while remaining a vital avenue into self-examination and the human condition. These heads and others function as quasi-communities with good people and bad, heroes and villains. People who are just trying to make it from day to day and people who are doing pretty good. They are diverse in their personality, habits and ways of seeing the world and in that respect just as human.

Frederick Hayes received both his BFA and his MFA from The San Francisco Art Institute and has been living in New York City for close to 20 years. He is the recipient of two Pollack-Krasner Grants, as well as grants from the Robert Blackburn Workshop and the San Francisco Arts Commission. Recent Exhibitions have taken place at Felician University, Rutherford, NJ, Patricia Sweetow Gallery, SF, CA and Jeff Bailey Gallery, Hudson, NJ. His work has been written about in the New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle and is in the collection of University Art Museum, Berkeley, CA, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, SF, CA, Studio Museum in Harlem, NY, NY and the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, MA.
