ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Rosie Lopeman is an artist and a runner. Whether in that order or not, it makes no difference — the making feeds the moving and the moving feeds the making. Lopeman is propelled by an innate forward motion and her works are traces, like thought bubbles or footprints or hiccups. Using GRIDSPACE as a respite / workspace for three months, Lopeman will maintain her studio practice in it and at three predetermined times, formalize her process and open the doors to the public. This performative and sculptural project is about the passage of time — our notions of it, the attempts we make to keep pace with it and the ecstatic (and aesthetic) moments that take place within.
The gallery will be open to the public on Sundays: October 8 and October 29 from 12–6 and November 26 from 4–6 pm, which will also be the closing reception.
Rosie Lopeman is a Brooklyn based sculptor. Her first solo exhibition, Expire, Inspire, was in June 2017 at John Davis Gallery, Hudson, New York. In 2016, she graduated with a certificate in painting from the New York Studio School. Upon graduating, Lopeman received the Hohenberg Travel Award, a grant given to one graduating student to travel and see art in Europe. During her travels she was inspired by Etruscan necropoles and artifacts, and Niki De Saint Phalle셲 Tarot Garden in Tuscany. Other recent group exhibitions include the Summer Invitational at David & Schweitzer Contemporary in Bushwick, and Material Matters, at Peninsula Gallery, Red Hook. As an undergraduate, she studied printmaking and furniture design at RISD, before transferring to Bard College, where she graduated with a B.A. in studio art. She lives in Crown Heights and her studio is in Greenpoint.
